Perpetual futures have no expiry, so exchanges use a funding payment, exchanged between longs and shorts at set intervals, to keep the contract price near the spot price. Holding a position through funding costs you or earns you money.
The formula
Funding per interval = position value × funding rate. Total = funding per interval × number of intervals held. When the rate is positive, longs pay and shorts receive.
Worked example
A long position worth 10,000 at a rate of 0.01% every 8 hours pays 1 each interval. Held for 7 days (21 intervals) that costs 21. The simple annualised rate is 0.01% × 3 × 365 = 10.95%.
Things to know
- Rates are set each interval and can swing a lot, so this assumes a constant rate.
- Intervals and formulas differ between exchanges. Check yours.
- Funding is charged on the position value, not your margin, so higher leverage makes it a bigger share of your capital.
