APR (annual percentage rate) is the stated yearly rate before compounding. APY (annual percentage yield) is what you actually earn in a year after compounding. The more often interest compounds, the higher the APY for the same APR. Savings, staking and DeFi platforms often quote one or the other, so converting lets you compare them fairly.
The formulas
- APY = (1 + APR ÷ n)n − 1, where n is the number of compounding periods a year.
- APR = n × ((1 + APY)1/n − 1).
- With continuous compounding, APY = eAPR − 1.
Worked example
A 5% APR compounded monthly is an APY of about 5.12%. Compounded daily it is 5.13%, and continuously 5.13%. The table shows the same APR at each frequency.
Things to know
Variable rates, fees and lock-up periods change what you really earn. In crypto, high advertised yields often carry extra risks, such as the platform failing or the token price falling.
